camp grace and the Streetleaders program

The heart of UrbanPromise Trenton is our AfterSchool Program, which is available in East Trenton through Camp Grace. Every child has a seed of greatness, and by providing a child with a safe and supportive environment that seed can grow and thrive. Children can become responsible young adults who make meaningful contributions to their families, peers and community.  Students attending Camp Grace enjoy a healthy snack, have opportunity to play and exercise and receive help with their homework.  We also have a dedicated reading time built into each day to help students read better. Our closing program has a spiritual component to end the day on a positive note!

Additionally, teens from the East Trenton neighborhood are employed as StreetLeaders, acting as counselors, tutors, and mentors for the children who attend Camp Grace. For many, this is their first employment opportunity, but more importantly, being StreetLeaders keeps these teens off the streets and away from the lure of gangs and Trenton’s crime scene. In addition to job training, they participate in academic enrichment, tutoring, leadership workshops, and college preparation.

We believe that an educated child becomes an empowered adult. That is why our goal is to see each and every teen in our program graduate from high school. We have achieved that goal each year since our program started, and many of our teens are now enrolled in college. The graduation rate for StreetLeaders is 100%, while the city's rate hovers below 70%.  StreetLeaders report an improved confidence, self-esteem, and hope for a brighter future.
