Small Home Repairs

The Small Home Repairs (SHR) program supports current homeowners and their families through mini-grants to make essential health and safety repairs to their homes.  Led by a resident advisory committee and offered once a year as funding becomes available, the program prioritizes repair projects that address severe health and safety hazards and improve the quality of living for homeowners and their families.

ETC recognizes that healthy, safe, and welcoming housing is an important component of a thriving neighborhood. ETC also believes that resident leadership, expressed through residents’ shared investment and participation in neighborhood improvement activities, is an equally important component.  The Small Home Repairs program seeks to improve housing conditions in the East Trenton neighborhood while providing opportunities for resident leadership.

Quick Facts

Program Application

The 2024 Small Home Repair Program Application will be available when the application period opens on May 1.

Who is eligible?

Homeowners who own and live in and own property located in East Trenton may apply for this program. Homeowners’ family members who live in their East Trenton property are also eligible. Property owners (landlords) who rent their properties to non-family members and tenants are not eligible for this program. Owners of vacant properties are not eligible for this program.

Who completes the repairs?

Program applicants identify the repairs they would like to have completed and select a licensed, registered, and insured contractor to complete the repairs. Applicants are responsible for choosing a contractor that they are comfortable working with and trust to complete the repairs to their satisfaction. Contractors provide an estimate for the proposed repairs, which applicants submit with their application.

What is the maximum award for the mini-grant?

The maximum award is currently $6000. Applicants, together with their contractors, determine the scope of work for their project and submit an estimate. If the estimate is for $6000 or less, the awardee will receive a mini-grant that will match the estimate exactly. If the estimate is for an amount greater than $6000, the awardee will receive a mini-grant for $6000 and will be required to pay the balance of the amount to their contractor.

Small Home Repairs Committee

The Small Home Repairs Committee is a resident advisory committee that reviews and updates program guidelines, issues program applications, and anonymously reviews applications to select awardees on a strictly objective basis.
